POISE SOCIAL

#WOMENARENOJOKE

On April 1st, we took to social to call out what a joke it is that women are only celebrated 31 days a year.

We continued the fun throughout the year with a series of #womenshistoryyear social posts detailing rebellious women throughout history

We weren't joking around. Today, we're officially kicking off#WomensHistoryYear by celebrating KING TAMAR THE GREAT OF GEORGIA.

After being crowned co-ruler of the Georgian kingdom, at the age of 18, Tamar refused her traditional title, claiming moniker of "king". She commanded a gang of medieval knights before building one of the most unstoppable armies in history. YAS, KING Tamar.

Another day, another opportunity to celebrate #WomensHistoryYear. Meet Althea Gibson. 🎾

Althea was raised in Harlem and began playing tennis as a teenager. She became the first Black player to win three back to back world-renowned singles championships. Her autobiography titled, “I Always Wanted to Be Somebody,” leaves us thinking: mission accomplished.

Another day, another woman to celebrate for #WomensHistoryYear. Today, we’re bowing down to Dr. Rosalind Franklin.

A British Chemist who changed the world we know today with her pioneering role in discovering the molecular structure of viruses, though she’s just now gaining recognition for it. #SociallyDistantHighFive

It’s not just her contributions in the discovery of DNA that we’re celebrating, but her unapologetic pursuit for the greater good of humanity that proves how society can fear a strong woman, but can never ignore her. #SorryNotSorry

They called her queen, but she preferred a different title ✨. In another edition of #WomensHistoryYear, we're celebrating Hatshepsut, the first female ruler of ancient Egypt to rule as a male with the supreme title of pharoah. During her reign, Egypt emerged as a world power where the arts flourished and peace prevailed. Her success is the same reason for the controversy: according to Egyptian tradition, no woman should have been able to assume the full power of pharaoh. Talk about smashing the #patriarchy. Let's all drop a 👑 for Hatshepsut, just in time for the upcoming #WomensEqualityDay.

Another day, another woman to celebrate for #WomensHistoryYear. Today we remember the Mirabal sisters, who together, resisted Rafael Trujillo aka El Jefe’s dictatorship in the Dominican Republic. Patria was the OG activist, she inspired her sisters to get involved. Minerva was the first woman to graduate law school in the DR while María Teresa continued fighting the good fight even after multiple arrests. They named themselves “The Butterflies” because the sisters knew they could be fighters while still being feminine. They were the definition of #cantstopwontstop and we are OBSESSED.

We know what you’re thinking, this is our kind of girl! Cheers to Patty Berg! #WomensHistoryYear

Patty (a.ka. Lieutenant Berg) is perhaps best known for revolutionizing women's role in the world of golf. After winning a record 15 major women’s championships, she parlayed her athletic success into a platform that helped to elevate women in the sport. In fact, Patty shared her gift by teaching over 16,000 clinics in her lifetime. Hey, we could have used some tips for putt putt last weekend! Needless to say, nothing about this lady’s golf game was miniature.🏌️‍♀️

That’s right, this lady was the first female wireless operator in the British army, under the codename “Madeleine.” She spent years undercover in Nazi-occupied France, relaying information that would help win the war, even while being labeled “very feminine” and “childlike” by her superiors *side-eye*. In the end, she was awarded the George Cross by Britain and the Croix de Guerre by France because everyone stans for this lady spy.

Next up in our tribute for #WomensHistoryYear. We raise our glass 🥂 to Bessie Coleman: a daring risk taker and soaring star of aviation who paved the way for others to explore the skies.

Bessie was the first African-American and Native-American, man or woman, to earn an international pilot's license. Even when U.S. aviation schools refused to admit her, she learned French on her own and travelled to France to attend flight school. (Cause there's no stoppin' what can't be stopped.) Known for her death-defying air shows and incredible flight stunts, she became known as "Queen Bess".

If Queen Bess has taught us anything, it's that the sky's the limit and today we celebrate her legacy for flying over the #glassceiling ✈️.
